Reflections on the Sinfulness of Cruelty to Animals…A Sermon…Preached in SouthHampton

1807」 Richard Mant, Reflections on the Sinfulness of Cruelty to Animals「Google Books」: On Some of the Most Prevalent Examples of It, and On Some of the Most Powerful Motives By Which It Is Encouraged, In a Sermon Preached at All Saint’s Church, Southampton, on Sunday, Aug. 16, 1807 (London, 1807).

Commentary-Excerpts-Reference-Reprints-Reviews

This is a very judicious and impressive discourse, and the preacher has our thanks for the very able manner in which, at the conclusion of it, he has proved the evil tendencies of the pleasures of the sportsman, who seeks gratification and amusement from the terror, the pains, and the death of a defenceless animal. He justly suspects, we fear, that this part of his discourse will not be generally approved; and it is much to be lamented that the conduct of so many of his clerical brethren will counteract rather that promote his humane and benevolent labours.—review of “Reflections on the Sinfulness of Cruelty to Animals… by Richard Mant,” Annual Review 6 (1807) 187-188.

「1808-Dec」 By sensible and solid arguments, the author of this plain discourse manifests and reproves the evil practice, which in a variety of forms is too commonly tolerated in this civilized and christain country. …We sincerely wish that this laudable and useful tract may be widely circulated, and tend to check the vicious and baneful practices which it so justly condemn. review of “Reflections on the Sinfulness of Cruelty to Animals… by Richard Mant,” Monthly Review, or Literary Journal (1808-Dec) 57.
